Get Fit, Get Hydrated

Here’s the deal. During exercise, your body physically adapts to the challenges of exercise. One of the effects of this physical activity is that your body temperature raises and you sweat, causing dehydration. Another thing that happens is that your body uses carbohydrates to work your muscles, which uses up this energy. But don’t worry, drink ‘Powerade’ and before you know it you’ll replace all the things you’ve lost. Phew!

Now the body may be made up of 65% water, but a water loss of just 1-2% (dehydration) can have a negative effect on endurance and performance. Not a good thing.

And then things like this can happen: dehydration puts a strain on the cardiovascular system and this increases the heart rate. The body’s ability to deal with heat is affected and a whole load of interrelated elements act to impair endurance. So what you get is a performance which lacks, well, performance.

When you consider you can lose around two litres of water an hour in hot conditions, ensuring you are properly hydrated makes quite a lot of sense.

Get your hydration sorted

But of course, none of this needs to happen if you check out our Hydration Calculator. That’s because it works out your work out and tells you how much fluid you need to drink to stay hydrated.
